A great evening with Herbie Hancock for some wild Jazz at the Arnold Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, OR. Herbie Hancock introduced the stage as a minefield “these guys are monsters” he said. He was joined by Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, James Genus on bass, and Lionel Loueke on guitar.
Put on by the Oregon Symphony it was a beautiful night, though a bit short with just one long extended set. Lionel did do an extended guitar experiment incorporating his own rhythm and some amazing voice – pulling lots of rabbits out of his sleeves, the stage was littered with them! The group played some goodies: cantaloupe and watermelon man, but you probably wouldn’t know it – they were charting new waters with strange sounds around those classic frameworks. Every now and then good old Headhunter sounds would sound out, then the group would swiftly drift away into complexity. Herbie even got out his live vocoder and brought back some sounds from the album sunlight.
