Silver gelatine black and white prints from my January 2013 visit to Arches.  I got my darkroom up and running in the past few months and spend a chunk of time diving back into the rhythms of printing by printing a series of 645 negatives from Arches and Dead Horse Point.  Funny to compare to the quick digital developments posted previously.  I love the desert, and we had the good luck of visiting with snow and having a few extra bits of contrast here and there.  Click to make bigger and let me know what you think!

These are 8×10 prints currently in 14×18 matts.  I may make a few 11×14 enlargements.  One image is missing from this post, hopefully I can get that photographed next week.  If you are interested in purchasing matted prints please contact me directly.

Warning, Death ValleyComing back from Vegas, what a short trip, but what a long journey back.  Several days, passing through Death Valley and stopping again in Reno.  Long deserts and plains.  Mountains rising and falling.  The lake again frozen.  Foggy roads and home again. Continue reading →

NicholasTravers__DSCN9196 Vegas strip last night was bogus,  a nice walk, but We wanted nature, earth, desert – so we headed to calico basin to catch some red rocks, stars, and fresh air.  I didn’t end up getting many images of the surrounding folds of rocks as I look back.  Nor any of the Petroglyphs.  I was more interested in gaping and clambering over some boulders, maybe a friend will post some and I can link to them.  So here is what I did catch Continue reading →

The meanderings of the wash though dry desert scrubAfter our visit to the Hoover dam we went back down the road a bit and went exploring down Gold-Strike Canyon. The canyon winds its way down the hills towards the Colorado. There may or may not be hot springs along the way, we didn’t go far enough to find any. Lots of cars along the Dirt road, obviously a known and well frequented spot. There is no trail really, just follow the wash on down and respect the desert environment by limiting off trail use. The sun was fading as we dropped down away from the highway. Caves and rims illuminated in the sun. Continue reading →

shadow of the bridge... with lake mead behind the dam
After finally arriving in Vegas late the night before, we had a slow morning before heading off to the Hoover dam and to search for hot springs. We met up with a friend and grabbed some vegetarian rice wraps and some Thai food somewhere, from Veggie Delight and Noodle House. Then we wound along many freeways and wide boulevards, with the towers of casinos in the distance as we made our way west.  I gaped at those billboards, glittering lights, and unblinking windows. While my camera turned to the rocks thrusting up around us. Las Vegas is surrounded by wonderful mountains, rocky bare hills with sharp points.   Continue reading →

In birthday celebrations we headed off, how! down the road through Oregon for a visit to Reno and Vegas. These sights lie off the road, as we drove, where we stopped. Starting out with long roads. The cloudy skies and fog vanishing at lookout point lake, the white air around us suddenly an unnatural blue – as if a diesel ahead of us had belched out all the days exhaust at once. But on the other side of that underpass we looked u to see the blue sky breaking through the fog. We continued up over Willamette pass. Continue reading →
