today I open a special box.
in it spikes of fascination –
lying on a remnant of the past.

and behold, what is this,
that which greets me merrily?
new growth!
from a severed cactus
admired for its roundness and incredible sharpness.
In darkness it lay, now a green bud springs forth.

a closer look – the old nurtures the young.
